BIOGRAPHIE

STRUAN DOUGLAS

Struan Douglas is a South African based African cultural writer, performer, presenter, activist and educator. Douglas has Honours in Philosophy and Religion from the Social Sciences Department University of Cape toawn, 1999. He studied music at University of KwaZulu natal, Howard College, and has RSM5 in theory and trumpet performance Ukusa UKZN (2012).

He is a professional freelance journalist, specialising in Pan African culture. Since 1999 to the current day, he has contributed on African arts and culture to many media publications . He contributes to a variety of magazines, newspapers, internet sites and publication on an ad hoc basis. This has included columns for Sawubona, Big Issue and Downbeat. Freelance contributions have been made to Sunday and Saturday Independent Newspapers, M & G, Expressions, Directions, Bejazzed, GQ, Cape Times, City Press Biophile, Mini International, Business Day, New Frame, Pacific Magazine, Skylife, Downbeat, New Africa Magazine, Billboard and others. He has been invited to over a dozen countries on two continents.

His website afribeat.com was launched April 1st 2000. It is a content portal for helping people tell their stories through creativity. To date Afribeat.com has released four music albums; Afribeat compilation, Archive Africa, Moment in Cape Town and Goema Captains of Cape Town and six books; Shadows of Justice, Airborne to Africa & The New South Africa and the friends around her, To the Peace on Earth and The Story of SA Jazz, Volume’s 1 & 2.
With a passion for South African jazz he is contributing to the educational future of this musical form with presentations at schools, collaborative live performances and is a director of the Sausage Film Company with the rights to transfer the book series Story of South African Jazz, to film.
